This is one example of intertextuality. This reference was made in an episode of the Simpsons to the famous Beatles album “Abbey Road”. Homer’s band walks in a manner reminiscent to how the Beatles do, The title “BIGGER THAN JESUS” is a reference to John Lennon’s controversial interview in which he proclaimed that the Beatles were “bigger than Jesus”. |
This is another example of intertextuality. This is from another episode of The Simpsons. It is mimicking the Beatles album “Rubber Soul”. In this, the characters are positioned in a tilted manner similar to that of the album with a green background. Also, the title “Rubber Pants” is similar to the original “Rubber Soul”, and is written in a similar font.
This is an example of optional intertextuality. In this, Mr.Burns is drawn identically to the Grinch to showcase that they are similar in behavior. This is not necessary to understand the story, but provides a bonus to the understanding of the story, as this episode was a christmas episode.
Exercise: Look at a magazine cover. What can you tell about the type of magazine it is; what kinds of articles it contains; who is likely to read it? Why?
This issue of VOGUE magazine makes it clear that it is a magazine that focuses on fashion and women’s issues. The magazine’s focus on fashion is made apparent by its title, as vogue is defined as “the prevailing fashion or style at a particular time” by Oxford Languages. VOGUE’s focus on women's issues are seen in it’s article teasers such as “How healthy is your hair?” and “MADONNA: AS A WOMAN, I HAD TO FIGHT TO GET TO WHERE I AM NOW”.
VOGUE attempts to offer an exquisite, stylish, and artistic lifestyle, with this being seen on the cover. The cover has a woman in makeup, in a fancy dress,, and wearing expensive jewelry while sitting in an aesthetically pleasing situation. The palette in the cover is black and white, leading the viewer to see the cover as “classic”
There are certain words in the typography that are different colors to draw attention to them. This being “Style in the city” and the previously mentioned Madonna quote. This further enforces that this magazine wants to sell a stylish lifestyle to women. The point of this cover is essentially to tell the viewer “buy this magazine and you will be this stylish as well”.
